We are proudly part of the only FIRST Partner District in Alabama and the only school in the state with the full progression of FIRST programs. In our school, we support 13 FIRST LEGO League (Discover, Explore, and Challenge) Class Packs as well as two FIRST Tech Challenge Teams.
We are proud to support FIRST and STEM for K-12 in our school while also building a pipeline of programs to support the future of our team!
We have been fortunate to get funding from a variety of corporate grants and sponsorships each year. This allows students to participate in our program free of charge. We have longstanding parnerships with many of our sponsors, including being a NASA House Team, which contributes to the overall sustainability of our program.
Our lead coach, Taylor Whisenant, had the privilege to participate in the 2024 FIRST Air Force Leadership Experience at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. We held a team leadership workshop based on her experiences at the training, including topics such as Qualities of a Leader, Increasing Leadership Confidence, Leadership and Work Styles, Gracious Professionalism, Compromising Effectively, Developing Quality Presentations, and Giving a Team Elevator Pitch. We ended the workshop with a game of Capture the Flag to practice our teamwork and leadership skills!
Our team has hosted several student-led CAD workshops. At these workshops, we learned about everything from how to use basic CAD tools to methods to stay more organized and more efficient with CAD designs.
At this workshop, we had a professional materials engineer come teach us how to make and effectively use composite materials in our designs. At this workshop, we not only learned how to make different kinds of composite materials, we also made our own examples to better learn about the process you have to use when making composite materials.
In the fall, we held a series of programming workshops for team, including topics such as Java programming, WPILib, FRC robot programming, command-based architecture, and AdvantageScope/AdvantageKit.
